Shadow Queen

Kind of, since the story has already gotten to this point. If they all die, they all die. I'm actually ok with that kind of ending, because protagonist was framed to be this realistically helpless.

Probably not. Mar 16, S. Wright rated it really liked it. A Duethin stands still, Matilde. None among the Turasi will bend their neck to a fidgeter.

Thus we are introduced to our protagonist, a young woman on the verge of becoming the leader of the squabbling Turasi Clans.

To say she is wholly unprepared for the events of the novel is an understatement. The Tale Shadow Queen is a pacey political thriller in a fantasy setting.

Our protagonist Matilde is to take the throne and rule over the Turasi. Before she can claim it, she is usurped by the leader of a renegade clan and in an effort to survive the slaughter of her entire line, offers herself in marriage.

Kill your darlings or Oppress them Kalin is merciless in placing her protagonist in dire straights from beginning to end.

I love that our protagonist rarely wields a weapon, or becomes Xena Warrior princess to achieve her aims. It is of course set against a backdrop of impending war, but Kalin has done a great job using psychological tension and the interplay between characters to ensure that neither Matilde nor the reader really have a chance to catch their breath.

Story and Character The world of Shadow Queen is broadly painted. Kalin gives us sign posts rather than detailed histories.

She wants our focus on story and character. Kalin succeeds and the result is pacey and emotionally enticing. Matilde is believable, a young adult thrust into leadership and woefully incapable of playing the political game.

But she is a survivor and one gets the impression that she will learn, if painfully so. Shadow Queen strikes me as a mature work, not a debut novel.

Its pace and ease of reading feels more like the work of a journeyman than a novice. I am looking forward to more of Deborah Kalin.

This novel was provided to me at no cost by the author Apr 11, Celia rated it liked it Shelves: fantasy , australian-author.

I enjoyed this tense, dark fantasy, about Matilde, the heir to the throne, and the considerable political upheaval that takes place in her land.

I was a bit concerned that the story was edging towards a falling-in-love-with-a-captor thing, which is one of my pet hates. It's ends ambigiously - there's clearly a lot more story to come, and ends in a fairly dark place - and so it's not clear whether Matilde's feelings whatever they are, and even she is not sure are the result of a sort of I enjoyed this tense, dark fantasy, about Matilde, the heir to the throne, and the considerable political upheaval that takes place in her land.

It's ends ambigiously - there's clearly a lot more story to come, and ends in a fairly dark place - and so it's not clear whether Matilde's feelings whatever they are, and even she is not sure are the result of a sort of Stockholm syndrome.

I like the uncertain nature of this novel, Matilde's desperate attempts to regain and secure power, the desperate sense of how much is at stake.

It's not a cliffhanger ending not a happy end, but not really a cliffhanger which is nice in a series where you have to wait for the next book to be published.

Mar 11, Isobel rated it did not like it. I don't know what to think of this book. It was an easy read and I think I enjoyed it but I didn't understand any of the plot and I couldn't relate to the the main character.

Everything happens so quickly, if the writer had decided to write more prose instead of something different happening each chapter that would be great.

Also do the characters in this realm have multiple-personalities because that's what it felt like.

One second you would know what a character was like, then it would change I don't know what to think of this book.

One second you would know what a character was like, then it would change and keep changing. Especially with Dieter. That drove me nuts.

There is a sequel but I'm not interested Dec 20, Jess rated it liked it. I found Shadow Queen quite fast-paced and refreshing to read.

I think the author achieved a good balance of detail for the readers to visualise the storys setting and characters without over doing it like many other books in the same genre.

The protagonist, Matilde, is a very believable character and I found myself empathising with all that she endured. I recommend Shadow Queen to anyone who is after a quick and easy read, filled with a good combination of action, suspense, politics and magic.

Readers would find it hard to put down this novel — especially in the last half of the book. Looking forward to the rest of the series!

Jul 15, Lola rated it it was ok. I really liked the beginning of the book, and I was enchanted with Matilde, cause she was so strong and determined and then something happened that she turned submissive and kind of weak and, the whole story lost the fast pace and just lost my attention.

Maybe it was because despite the bunch of characters the only one that seems to develop through the story is her, leaving the other like merely incidental ones.

Despide that, story is not that bad, in fact it is really interesting, but I felt I really liked the beginning of the book, and I was enchanted with Matilde, cause she was so strong and determined and then something happened that she turned submissive and kind of weak and, the whole story lost the fast pace and just lost my attention.

Despide that, story is not that bad, in fact it is really interesting, but I felt like is kind of dificult to follow at parts specially cause there are lots of names and places.

To sum up, it was a nice reading, but nothing I'm really looking forward to continue. Dec 20, Rafe rated it did not like it. One of the worst books I've ever attempted to read.

I rarely stop reading a book just because it's terrible, I have to finish things. It hits you in the face with a ridiculous turn of personality in the protagonist.

As soon as the third round began, the Shadow Queen was no longer invulnerable, and their attacks actually began to inflict damage on her. After a long, tough battle, the Shadow Queen was eventually defeated, and Princess Peach was returned to her normal self.

As being the final boss of the game, the Shadow Queen possess numerous of moves that is damaging. This wiki. This wiki All wikis.

However, her vessel may be able to suppress or co-opt her influence temporarily if they possess particularly strong willpower. In battle, while in her true form she is immune to normal and defense-piercing attacks, and can only be made vulnerable with the power of the Crystal Stars.

She is able to use her hands to drain the health of her enemies and pierce their defenses; they are also capable of smashing opponents to the ground, and are considered separate enemies that can be targeted individually.

When the hands defeated, the Shadow Queen can revive them the following turn. The Shadow Queen is also able to strike her opponents with lightning that pierces her target's defenses.

When low on health, the queen will often resort to attacks that induce poison , confusion , or allergies that prevent status changes.

One of the Shadow Queen's stronger attacks is the use of several shadowy hands that come up from the ground and drag Mario or one of his partners down into the shadows and damage them with several attacks or stampede them for heavy defense-piercing damage.

The queen will also attack the audience members with these hands to drain their energy to restore herself to full health and power. Her strongest attack is a series of dark energy waves that hit Mario and his partner for heavy damage, but this attack takes a turn to charge up, allowing Mario to avoid it with Vivian 's Veil ability.

Additionally, the Shadow Queen also has the ability to temporarily raise her attack and defense by 3. The Shadow Queen is a demon who cares only for herself and her aspirations, particularly conquering the world and remaking it in her image; she seems to rule her followers through fear rather than loyalty, as she often uses her powers to intimidate them.

The Shadow Queen is motivated by power and pride above all else, and is not afraid to assert her authority over anyone she sees as weak or insubordinate; despite Sir Grodus playing a major role in her unsealing, she blasts his head off for daring to suggest that she obey him.

She then takes on Mario and his party, believing them to be too weak to handle her. Some of the Shadow Queen's speech and behavior vary somewhat between the Japanese and English versions of the game.

In the Japanese version, she speaks in a considerably more down-to-earth manner. For example, when she sees Mario and his party members, she describes them as looking "agreeable", and claims she will "let bygones be bygones" when offering them a second chance to serve her.

In the English version, she speaks more formally, and is more condescending, backhandedly describing Mario and his party members as looking weak but possibly useful.

While possessing Peach, the princess's skin turns paler with dark makeup, and her dress becomes dull purple with white detailing. She wears a similarly-colored cloak with a high collar; the collar causes her hair to appear significantly shorter as well.

Peach's crown and jewelry turn red and take a similar shape to those of the Shadow Queen; her face also takes on a more cruel expression.

Grodus, thinking the Queen was under his control because he revived her, ordered her to destroy Mario. The Queen, insulted by Grodus thinking her to be a slave, blew apart his robotic body.

The Shadow Sirens then appeared, and Beldam explained to the Shadow Queen they created the myth of an ancient treasure and tricked Grodus into reviving her, and the Shadow Queen thanked them for work.

The Shadow Queen then sees Mario, and offers him a choice of being her servant, which he of course refuses the player can choose yes, but it will result in an instant Game over.

She then attacked Mario, and while the fight was not too hard at first, the Shadow Queen eventually became invincible.

None of Mario's party attacks were able to do any damage and all Mario could do to survive was to wait until the crystal stars came out in response to the evil in the area.

Once that happened, the friends who Mario had made along the way encouraged him with their pleasant thoughts, which were communicated through the Crystal Stars.

This distracted the Shadow Queen long enough for Peach to gain momentary control and give Mario all her power. Receiving full power, Mario could now harm the Shadow Queen and the true battle began.

After a lengthy and intense showdown, the demon was defeated and she expressed disbelief at how she could be beaten by such beings that were as weak as she believed.

She then vanishes, in a shadowy explosion that ripples across the room, leaving behind an unharmed Princess Peach, who returns to her normal self.

It is not known what happened to her but it is believed that she is now in a very weak form, or else entirely destroyed. An image of the JP version top where Mario is visibly brainwashed, and one of the EN version bottom where Mario remains defensive with no effects of brainwashing.

This alternate ending just happens during the scene where The Shadow Queen tries to convince Mario to be her servant after she saw how Mario could be useful for her.

Afterwards, the player has two options of choose "Refuse this witch! Then the screen turns black and a last message explains the Shadow Queen took over the whole world and engulfed it into an age of darkness for everyone including Peach, Mario and all his friends.

After that, the final scene consists of a Game Over. It should be noted that in the Japanese version, when the player accepts the Shadow Queen's offer, the screen suddenly flashes and Mario assumes the same posture he had when Doopliss impersonated him.

However, in the other versions Mario remains the same with no visible effects of brainwashing. As with most characters in the manga, she displays more of a comic side.

Ultimate as a Primary Attack-type Spirit. Her appearance is based on her first form when possessing Peach. Her Spirit can only be obtained through summoning using cores from Vivian and Gengar.
